General Alfred M. Gray Jr., USMC (Ret)
June 22, 1928 – March 20, 2024
MCUF mourns the loss of the founder of our present day Marine Corps University (MCU), General Alfred M. Gray Jr., USMC (Ret), who passed away on March 20, 2024.
As the founder of MCU, General Gray had a tremendous impact on the advancement of professional military education for the Marine Corps. He remained in overwatch of the continued focus and growth of PME far beyond his time as Commandant. General Gray was a long time supporter of the Marine Corps University Foundation and gave freely of his time and intellect to support our mission of enhancing the professional military education experience of our Marines, and was very much a part of the Foundation’s successes. The Foundation recognized his significant contributions to our Country, our Corps, and our Foundation with the awarding of the Foundation’s Semper Fidelis Award in 2020. The Foundation had the honor of overseeing the creation of the “Al and Jan Gray Study Room” in the Gray Research Center on Quantico in 2022. This study holds General Gray’s personal library and select memorabilia from his life as a Marine and commemorates his and his late wife Jan’s devotion to the Corps.
MCUF extends our condolences to those blessed to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his Marine Corps family during this time of remembrance.
