Inside the Quantico Military Experience

Through its partnership with the Marine Corps University Foundation, Wharton Leadership Ventures continues to support the growth of military leaders. This year after completing the Quantico Military Experience, the program contributed $15,000 to Marine Corps University Foundation to support the education of Marines at Marine Corps University and to advance its mission.  

The Quantico Military Experience is a University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business McNulty Leadership Program intensive venture that immerses participants in the demanding leadership environment of the U.S. Marine Corps.  Held at Marine Corps Base Quantico, the program builds upon the leadership development model used at Officer Candidates School (OCS). Over two fast-paced days, participants engage in hands-on exercises inspired by the Marine Corps’ Leadership Reaction Course and Combat Course, both designed to test decision-making and teamwork under pressure.  

Participants are organized into small “fire teams,” reflecting the structure used in Marine Corps training. Within these teams, they face a series of leadership scenarios similar to those encountered by officer candidates. These challenges require navigating unfamiliar terrain, overcoming physical obstacles, and developing strategic plans in time-sensitive situations. Each scenario emphasizes fast decision-making and team-based problem solving.  

Marine officers guide the experience, providing mentorship and real-time feedback throughout each exercise. Their instruction helps participants refine their leadership approach, with a focus on adaptability, accountability, and effective communication. The Leadership Reaction Course presents complex logistical problems, while the Combat Course introduces physically and mentally demanding scenarios that replicate the stress of operational environments.  

By combining academic leadership training with the practical experience of Marine Corps methodologies, the Quantico Military Experience provides participants with a deeper understanding of leadership in high-pressure environments while strengthening the connection between civilian and military communities.
