Bob Parsons Shares Life Lessons During Singleton Lecture Series
Vietnam War veteran, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Bob Parsons spoke to the Staff Noncommissioned Officer (Staff NCO) Academy Quantico at Marine Corps University as part of the Singleton Lecture Series, sharing lessons on resilience and service drawn from his experiences in both combat and business.
The lecture series was established to memorialize Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Walter K. Singleton, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War after carrying wounded Marines to safety and eliminating an enemy position. The annual event is designed to broaden the leadership perspectives of future Marine Corps leaders attending the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy.
Parsons, a Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam and later became a self-made billionaire and founder of GoDaddy, reflected on the challenges of combat, the realities of returning home and the determination that helped him succeed after military service. His discussion focused on perseverance and determination, themes that resonated with the audience of Staff NCOs preparing for increased leadership responsibilities throughout the force.
Each student attending the lecture received a copy of Parsons' memoir, Fire in the Hole! The Untold Story of My Traumatic Life and Explosive Success, providing an opportunity to further explore the experiences and lessons he shared during the event.
Members of the Singleton family were in attendance, continuing their support of the lecture series and its mission of exposing Marines to accomplished leaders from a variety of backgrounds and professions.
Adding to the significance of the event, Parsons was joined by three fellow Vietnam veterans who served alongside him in Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines. During the program, the Marine Corps University Foundation presented the veterans with welcome-home gifts in recognition of their service and sacrifices, creating a meaningful moment of appreciation for a generation of service members whose homecoming experiences were often marked by a lack of public recognition.
The Singleton Lecture Series provides students, faculty and military professionals opportunities to engage with distinguished leaders whose experiences offer practical lessons in leadership, character and service. Parsons' remarks highlighted the enduring values of perseverance, humility and commitment that remain central to both military and civilian success.
